About Your Basal Metabolic Rate BMR:

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is a measurement of the number of calories your body needs to maintain its current weight.  This is a general measurement which doesn't take into account factors like pregnancy, heavy physical activity, illness, etc.  Still, the BMR is very valuable as an aid in making proper dietary decisions, particularly when setting goals for weight loss or weight gain (see below).

BMR And Weight Loss-Gain:

You can use the above calculator to determine how many calories you need daily to meet weight loss or weight gain (see anorexia) goals.  First, determine your goal weight using the BMI Calculator.  Next, enter your sex, age and goal weight into the above calculator.  The result will be the approximate number of calories you need daily to reach your goal weight over time.  Please consult your doctor before making major changes in your diet...you can use the results of the BMR and BMI numbers as a good starting point for that discussion.
