Stress Definition, Causes And Effects:

Definition:  Stress is the name we have for when we're physically or psychologically s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d to the breaking point.  It isn't a question of whether we have stress...we all do.  The question is whether we're experiencing a healthy level of stress that our system can handle.  For more detail, see these top-selling books on stress signs symptoms and relief.

Causes:  Physical stress is caused by poor diet, not enough exercise, health problems and illnesses, lack of essential nutrients, over weight, etc.  Psychological stress is caused by loss of loved one, divorce, marriage, retirement, new family member, vacation, new job, debt, mental/emotional illness/upset, problems at work, relationship problems, get the idea...anything.

Effects:  As we discuss in Attitude And Health even mental or emotional stresses have real physical effects.  Some of the illnesses and other conditions where stress is a cause or a contributing factor are asthma, baldness, heart problems, allergieshypertension, ulcers, colitis, impotence and constipation.  Stress is known to weaken the immune system, leading to early aging and lowered resistance to everything from the common cold to cancer.

Stress Signs and Symptoms:

Common signs and symptoms of stress are shortness of breath, muscle twitches, tight shoulders, lump in throat, itching, irritability, mouth ulcers, tight jaw, heart pain, heart flutter, high blood pressure, indigestion, heartburn, fatigue, poor concentration, insomnia, anxiety, headaches, tight neck muscles.  If you suffer regularly from 5 or more of these things you should examine the mind body spirit causes and work on stress relief (below).  If you suffer from more than 5, you may want to seek a doctor's opinion, as well.

Stress Relief:
